CHICAGO — Police say a 17-year-old boy was badly injured in a crash on Lake Shore Drive Saturday morning.

The boy was driving southbound when he lost control and hit a tree in the 2100 block of South Lake Shore Drive, near McCormick Place, about 10:15 a.m. The car caught fire, police said.

Witnesses, including an off-duty Chicago police officer, removed the boy from his vehicle before first responders arrived, police said. He suffered a head injury and leg lacerations, police said.

The boy was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was in critical condition, police said.
