PULLMAN — The declaration of the historic Pullman neighborhood as a National Monument Thursday marks the 16th such designation by President Obama, who came to the Far South Side to make the move.

Others include  the Honouliuli National Monument in Hawaii, the site of an internment camp for Japanese-Americans in World War II, and Browns Canyon National Monument in Colorado, a 21,000-acre site along the Arkansas River that is a favorite for whitewater rafting.

The sites "help tell the story of significant events in American history and protect unique natural resources for the benefit of all Americans."

Obama has made 16 such designations in his two terms as president. [See photos.]
