ARMOUR SQUARE — Police are investigating a series of catalytic converter thefts in Armour Square.

At least five thefts have been reported since Feb. 5. The incidents include:

  • Feb. 5 in the 300 block of West 23rd Street
  • Between Feb. 5-8 in the 2700 block of South Princeton Avenue
  • Feb. 8 in the 300 block of West 24th Place
  • Feb. 8 in the 2800 block of South Wells Street
  • Feb. 8 in the  2800 block of South Wells Street

Made of precious metals like platinum, palladium or rhodium, catalytic converters are part of an automobile's emissions control system. Experts say vehicles that sit high above the ground, like vans and SUVs, are susceptible because the parts are easier for thieves to steal.

Once stolen, catalytic converters can fetch up to $150 at scrap yards.

Victimized car owners, meanwhile, are left with a pricey fix, sometimes shelling out upward of $1,000 for replacement and installation.

Police are advising residents to park their vehicles in well-lit areas and to report suspicious activity.

Anyone with information on the thefts is asked to call Area Central detectives at 312-747-8382.
