CHICAGO A 17-year-old boy has been charged with attempted murder after exchanging gunfire with an Illinois state trooper Saturday night, authorities said.

The trooper noticed a vehicle reported stolen at a Shell gas station in the 5500 block of South Wells Street about 9 p.m. Saturday, and tried to make contact with a male sitting in the passenger seat, state police said in a statement.

The male, a 17-year-old boy, exited the vehicle and fled on foot. The trooper pursued him for about 1,000 feet on Wells Street. At one point, the boy turned and fired one shot at the trooper, who returned fire.

State police said the teen fell to the gorund and was arrested, though he was not injured. A weapon was recovered.

The teen has been charged with attempted murder of a police officer, aggravated discharged of a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, criminal trespass and aggravated assault. He is due in court Monday, state police said.
