COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — When two Logan Square residents spotted a man rifling through UPS packages earlier this week, they tracked him until police arrived, prosecutors said.

Dedrick Warren, 44, was arrested near Armitage and Kedzie avenues Tuesday afternoon and charged with felony theft.

Prosecutors said Warren had been opening UPS packages on a porch in the 2000 block of North Kedzie Avenue when he noticed one of the building's residents watching him.

Warren grabbed one of the boxes and walked toward a nearby alley, Assistant State's Attorney Erin Antonietti said in court Wednesday. A second resident, who had also spotted Warren and called 911, followed.

The resident confronted Warren, who had stopped to open the package, Antonietti said. Warren took off, leaving the package behind, and the resident continued to watch him until police arrived.

Both witnesses positively identified Warren, who lives in the 200 block of North Laramie Avenue, according to a police report.

On Wednesday, Cook County Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil ordered Warren held in lieu of $10,000 bail.
