CHICAGO — A 60-year-old man died after being hit by a Chicago Police car in South Shore early Wednesday.

The man was walking in the 2800 block of East 79th Street around 1:14 a.m. when he was struck by an unmarked squad car heading east on 79th Street, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago Police Department spokeswoman.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Sedevic said.

He was identified as Kevin Garrett, of the 1000 block of West Lawrence Avenue. He was pronounced dead at 1:37 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

The streetlights were out on the south side of the street; the north side of the street doesn't have any streetlights; and the man was dressed in all black, Sedevic said.

The major accidents unit is investigating, and no one else was injured, police said.
