MORGAN PARK — Monica Wilczak of Beverly was cleaning out her closet recently and shrugged upon finding several balls of yarn covered in dust.

Wilczak, an organizer of the Beverly Art Walk, learned to knit in a "stitch n bitch" group on the North Side years ago. Now on the South Side, she's opted to take her dusty yarn and relaunch the group that marries this time-honored pastime with wine-soaked conversation.

Knit Wits' Stitch n Bitch will host its first meeting from 7-9 p.m. tonight in the community room of the Beverly Area Planning Association. Crocheters, needlepointers and rug hookers are all welcome at 1987 W. 111th St. in Morgan Park.

"I am hoping this little event will bring together the knitters of our community — both novice and experienced. It’s an old-fashioned concept, but also very contemporary in terms of artists and artisans coming together to create and learn from each other and build community," Wilczak said.

The free event asks participants to bring their own knitting materials, drinks and a snack for sharing. A youth craft table will also be available for parents with children in tow.

"In talking with some folks who are attending, I know they’ll be digging out unfinished needlepoint and hook-rug projects," Wilczak said.
