BRIDGEPORT — Don't dawdle, artists.

The deadline is Saturday for entries for the Bridgeport Art Competition

"People tend to leave it until the last day," curator Lelde Kalmite said.

Open to artists 18 and older who live or work within 100 miles of Chicago, the Bridgeport Art Gallery's third annual contest was "created to showcase the exceptional talents and abilities" of local artists, organizers said.

Artists are invited to submit their paintings, drawings, graphic art, photography, sculptures, 3D work and other forms of mixed media. Excluded are functional pottery, jewelry, clothing, accessories, furniture, other primarily functional art or “time-art”-like video.

Here's how to submit your work.

Prizes include a $1,000 award for "Best in Show," $400 for second place and $200 for third place, judged by artists Amanda Williams and Monika Wulfers.

Cash prizes will also be awarded for best 3D, representative and photo or photo-based art work.

The winners will be announced at the Feb. 28 opening reception at the gallery on the fourth floor of the Bridgeport Art Center, 1200 W. 35th St., where entries that have made the initial cut will be exhibited and judged.

The exhibition will be up through April 5.

Already, the contest has drawn 80-some entries and Kalmite expects more than 100 by the time Saturday's deadline closes.

Past Best in Show winners include Charles Gniech's acrylic-on-canvas painting "Grounded" and Joel Fisher's "Together We're F---ed."
