CHICAGO — A groundbreaking ceremony will be held Friday to mark the beginning of construction on a second By The Hand Club for Kids center in Austin.

U.S. Rep. Danny Davis and Ald. Emma Mitts (37th) will be among those in attendance, according to a statement.

The event will take place at 11:30 a.m. at 416 N. Laramie Ave. for the planned three-story, 53,000-square-foot building, to be built across from the current By The Hand Club building at 415 N. Laramie St.

A portion of the building will be leased by Moving Everest Charter School for 500 students. The charter school also leases space across the street with about 300 children in attendance, according to a statement.

The charter school received pushback from local groups last year, as it was within a mile of four closed CPS neighborhood elementary schools.

By The Hand is a nonprofit that offers after-school activities for kids and also operates centers in Cabrini-Green, Englewood and Altgeld Gardens.
