Armed Robberies in Roscoe Village and Lakeview Lead to Police Warnings

CHICAGO — Chicago Police issued a warning to residents in Roscoe Village and Lakeview after two armed robberies, including one in in which an off-duty Cook County sheriff's police officer exchanged gunfire with the thieves Wednesday night.

The first robbery occurred around 11:30 p.m. in the 1900 block of West Belmont Avenue and the other occurred minutes later around 11:35 p.m, in the 3200 block of North Clark Street.

The suspects are described as two black men between 20 and 25 years old, 6-foot to 6-foot-2, and weighing 170-180 pounds, police said. Both men were black skull caps, black hooded sweatshirts and black pants.

In the first robbery, the off-duty officer was approached by two men wearing masks in the 1900 block of West Belmont Avenue, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

During the robbery, one of the men opened fire, Sedevic said. The officer returned fire, causing the robbers to run off. No one was wounded during the exchange, Sedevic said.
