LOGAN SQUARE — A new advisory council for Palmer Square Park is gearing up for a February inaugural event to represent the Palmer Square community.

The Palmer Square Park Advisory Council will address issues specifically related to the park, largely due to growing interest in events at and around the park, according to Cathie Bond.

Bond will be the treasurer of the council if a list of positions are ratified Feb. 4 at the group's first meeting, where members and the public will discuss plans for organizing the advisory council and formally elect board members.

“There has been a piqued interest in hosting events in Palmer Square Park and neighbors would like to be sure these events do not interfere with the upkeep of the park,” Bond said, noting recent events held in the park like the annual Tour de Fat festival and Taste Talks, a celebrity chef barbecue event.

Issues like the contentious Palmer Square speed table debate could also be impacted by park council decisions.

“As the popularity of the Logan Square neighborhood grows, the use of the parks increase as well; neighbors of the park can now be involved in the upkeep of their park and voice their opinions on what needs to be done and what events will take place in their park,” she added.

The Chicago Park District and local alderman make final decisions on park activities but both offices rely on opinions and help from Park Advisory Councils.

Forming a council will also allow the neighboring community to raise funds for improvements in Palmer Square Park, with the approval of the Chicago Park District, Bond said.

The inaugural Palmer Square Park Council meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 4 in the cafeteria at St. Sylvester School, 3027 W. Palmer Blvd. Members of the council will be approved at the meeting via votes cast by those in attendance. Voting is limited to residents of Chicago, per Chicago Park District policy.

The slate of candidates includes Michael Warner for president, Kevin Palmer for vice president, Bond for treasurer, Amy Johnson for secretary and board members at-large Karen Biazar, Jeff Goeters and Steve Hier.
