Man Killed in South Side Shooting; Another Wounded in Chatham

CHICAGO — Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man in Washington Heights Saturday evening.

Police discovered a man who had been shot in an alley in the 9600 block of South Green Street about 6:45 p.m., said Officer Thomas Sweeney. The man, identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office as Bernard Pippen, 18, of the 11000 block of South State street,, was pronounced dead on the scene at 7:10 p.m.

An autopsy determined Pippen died of a gunshot wound to the neck that penetrated his chest.

Sweeney said police were questioning two people of interest, but police had no information on the circumstances leading to the shooting.

Around the same time, a 39-year-old man was shot in the leg in the 8000 block of South Stewart Avenue, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition. No more information was available.
