COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — An East Garfield Park man charged with robbing a cabbie at gunpoint was held on $500,000 bail Thursday.

Lorenzo Phillips, 24, made off with $33 cash when he pulled a gun on a cab driver outside a Wicker Park Walgreens, 1601 N. Milwaukee Ave., on Wednesday, court records show.

"For every cab driver in the city of Chicago, bail is set at $500,000," Cook County Judge Adam Bourgeois said during a bond hearing.

According to prosecutors, Phillips and three others got in a taxi in Norwood Park shortly after midnight Wednesday. After a stop in North Center, the group headed to the Walgreens at Damen and Milwaukee.

Phillips sat in the front seat and pulled a revolver, Assistant State's Attorney Lorraine Scaduto said. He took cash from the 44-year-old driver before he and the accomplices ran off.

The driver flagged down another taxi driver and called 911, prosecutors said.

A short while later, police patrolling near Lake Street and Ashland Avenue saw a group of four people that matched a description given by the cab driver, Scaduto said. All four ran away, but the officers caught up with Phillips.

Phillips, who lives in the 3300 block of West Congress Parkway, was charged with armed robbery.

Scaduto said Walgreens security cameras caught the incident on tape.
