SOUTH LOOP — On Chicago winter nights nothing warms the belly like a hearty pizza pie.

And DNAinfo.com’s guide to Chicago pizza got me especially hungry for my childhood favorite, Aurelio’s — that trademarked sweet sauce covered in salty mozzarella, tangy homemade sausage and peppers piled on a lightly charred thin crust cut into squares just the way I like it.

Last spring, Aurelio’s owner Joe Aurelio teased me with news that his suburban pizza chain would open in the South Loop by July only to disappoint — due to unavoidable construction delays the joint wouldn’t open until January.

In 1959, Joe Aurelio Jr. opened a small restaurant on Ridge Rd. in Homewood, Ill.

Last week, reader Rob Walton wrote to ask for an update.

“Do you know what’s happening with the South Loop location?

Unfortunately, Rob, the wait continues.

Joe Aurelio said construction to repair the exterior walls of the restaurant at Roosevelt and Michigan have gone at a “snail's pace” and that has forced him to push back the potential grand opening until “April or May.”

While that’s disappointing … there’s always Pequod’s while we wait.
