GOLD COAST — In the age of texts and social media, the Newberry library is striving to show the power of paper.

Love on Paper, a free exhibit on love letters and other affectionate handwritten notes, will open Thursday at the Newberry, 60 W. Walton St. The exhibit lasts through April 4.

A crowd-sourced exhibit, Love on Paper will feature a spectrum of love notes ranging from a 16th-Century heart-shaped map to letters capturing "the verbose sentimentality of the Victorian Age," according to a press release.

"Vintage valentines and handwritten notes demonstrate paper’s unique ability to convey otherwise inexpressible feelings and preserve them for years to come," the Newberry said in a statement.

From 4 to 7 p.m. on Feb. 11, guests can create their own 3-D paper valentine with paper artist Becky Saiki, the Newberry said.

An independent research library, the Newberry has served the public with free exhibits since 1887. Check out the Newberry website for more information.
