LINCOLN PARK — DePaul University's board of trustees has extended the contract of the university's president, the Rev. Dennis Holtschneider, through the end of 2019.

The contract extension is the third the board has offered Holtschneider since he took over as the 11th president in the school's history in 2004.

In an announcement regarding the contract extension, the university lauded Holtschneider's leadership through two strategic plans as well as the creation of the School of Hospitality, College of Communication and College of Science and Health.

Holtschneider also developed and led a fundraising campaign that raised more than $33 million from May 2010 through June 2014.

“As one of the nation's leaders in higher education, Father Holtschneider has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to DePaul’s diverse student population and providing access to an excellent education,” said William E. Bennett, chairman of DePaul’s board. “We are very pleased DePaul will continue to benefit from his leadership and expertise.”

DePaul University is the largest Catholic university in the United States.

There was no change to Holtschneider's salary in the contract extension, according to a university spokeswoman.

Holtschneider made $852,906 in 2013, according to a Chronicle of Higher Education report.

One hundred percent of his income is donated to the Vincentian order, with 75 percent going to the order's general national account and 25 percent funding a retirement account.

The salary also helps fund his room and board on campus at the Vincentian residence.

“DePaul is a very special place, and it is an honor to continue to serve as its president,” Holtschneider said. “I remain grateful to the faculty, staff and students who have contributed so much to the university. I look forward to celebrating many more achievements.”

Most recently, Holtschneider served as a visiting scholar and president-in-residence at the Harvard Graduate School of Education during the fall 2014 semester.
