CHICAGO — A West Pullman church was destroyed in a fire early Monday, and a second fire in a home in West Pullman sent a man to the hospital, authorities said.

The most recent fire destroyed Hyde Park African Methodist Episcopal Church, 12058 S. Eggleston Avenue around 3 a.m., Chicago Fire Department Chief Juan Hernandez said.

Within minutes of firefighters' arrival, the 1½-story building's roof collapsed, Hernandez said.

No one was injured in the blaze, but the fire did interrupt Metra service overnight, Hernandez said.

About 2½ hours earlier, another fire caused a man to jump off the roof of a building, Hernandez said.

Around 12:25 a.m., the blaze began on the 2nd floor of a building in the 11500 block of South Lafayette Avenue. The fire was struck out at 12:49 a.m., Hernandez said.

The 54-year-old man was taken to Advocate Christ Hospital in critical condition, Hernandez said.

No one else was injured in the fire, Hernandez said.
