COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A North Lawndale man charged with fatally shooting a cab driver Thursday night was held without bail on Monday.

Tyrese Bell, 24, ran home after the botched robbery and told a woman he "f---ed up," Assistant State's Attorney Enrique Abraham said in court Monday.

Police were able to arrest Bell after they followed his footprints in the snow to his house, prosecutors said.

The shooting happened about 8:45 p.m. Thursday when Bell took a cab to the 1200 block of South Albany Avenue, prosecutors said. Bell pulled a gun and pointed it at the back of the driver's head before firing twice.

The driver, 51-year-old Chinedu Madu, slumped over at the wheel, causing the taxi to crash into nearby parked cars, Abraham said.

Bell ripped down the cab's camera and ran to his home, located in the same street, prosecutors said. Once there, Bell gave a woman his gun and told her to deny having seen him.

As Bell walked with the woman to a nearby bus stop, he told her he "f---ed up," Abraham said. Prosecutors did not specify the woman's relationship to Bell.

Madu was pronounced dead on the scene at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Police who responded to 911 calls followed Bell's footprints in the snow to his house Thursday night, Abraham said. Surveillance video captured him getting out of the cab, and the taxi's internal camera shows Bell pointing a gun at Madu's head.

Bell was charged with first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated battery to a police officer. Abraham said Bell was combative after he was arrested, and injured three detectives — biting one of them.

Cook County Judge James Brown ordered Bell held without bail on Monday.
