COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A high school freshman was charged with attempted first-degree murder this week after prosecutors said he shot a classmate in the head in October.

Latrell Franklin, 15, got into an argument with a classmate from Morgan Park High School on Oct. 30, Assistant State's Attorney Akash Vyas said in court Monday.

As the pair stood several blocks from the school, near the intersection of Vincennes Avenue and Montvale Avenue, Franklin threatened to kill the classmate, Vyas said.

Franklin walked off and returned a short while later with a gun, according to prosecutors. Franklin fired several shots, striking his classmate in his abdomen, leg and head.

Doctors were unable to remove the bullets lodged in the victim's leg and head, Vyas said, and the teen suffered permanent vision damage.

Franklin was charged as an adult with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm.

On Monday, Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil ordered Franklin held in lieu of $800,000 bail.
