CHICAGO — A woman critically injured in a fire Friday morning in Edgewater has died, authorities said.

The fire erupted around 9 a.m. in a high-rise in the 5300 block of North Sheridan Road, said Joe Roccasalva, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman.

The 81-year-old woman suffered burns and was taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital in critical condition, Roccasalva said. She was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office as Ann Turner.

She was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital at 6:23 p.m., the Medical Examiner's Office said.

An autopsy performed Saturday determined Turner died of thermal injuries in the fire, which was due to "careless use of smoking materials."

The fire was extinguished by sprinklers in the unit, and no other injuries were reported.

CTA spokeswoman Catherine Hosinski said No. 151 and No. 147 buses were temporarily rerouted due to the fire on Sheridan Road and West Berwyn Avenue.
