ROGERS PARK — Fifteen years ago, residents of Rogers Park ushered in the New Year at the Heartland Cafe.

And a black-and-white photo reveals the scene outside the cafe at the turn of the century, said Michael James, the cafe's co-founder.

The photo, provided by the Rogers Park/West Ridge Historical Society, was taken at midnight Jan. 1, 2000, at the intersection of Glenwood and Lunt avenues, just west of the "L" tracks.

James said he remembers enjoying "great music and food, and then set off sparklers and some fireworks."

The Heartland also hosted a race, called "The Last Race of the Century," in which 200 people participated hours earlier.
