PORTAGE PARK — Residents of the Lydia Home were treated to a late Christmas present when they received free frozen yogurt Sunday, compliments of Josi's Frozen Yogurt Cafe.

Lydia Home provides an alternative to state-run foster care and operates out of three locations in Illinois - Chicago, Lyons and Rockford.

Josi’s will be closing for the winter season, and rather than let the product go to waste, owner Barbie Murphy decided to give it away to the neighboring Lydia Home.

“I’m closing for winter and there will be a lot of product to toss so I’d rather give it to people that will appreciate it," she said.

Residents of the home, who could not be interviewed as they are wards of the state, came in three minibus trips to the café and were delighted with their free fro-yo.

Murphy is a volunteer with Lydia House through its safe families program, which is how she got the idea for her surplus giveaway.

“I think Lydia Home is an amazing organization in the community that not many people know about,” said Murphy.

Josi's Frozen Yogurt, 4032 N. Milwaukee Ave., officially closes Sunday night and will reopen on the March 1, 2015.
