Man Dies, 7 Wounded in Sunday Gun Violence

CHICAGO — Shootings Sunday killed one and wounded seven people including a 14-year-old girl and a boy, police said.

In the most recent shooting, two people, including a boy, were shot during a robbery in the 5200 block of West Washington Boulevard about 5:55, police said.

Someone approached a 45-year-old man who was outside and announced a robbery, said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a police spokesman. During the incident, the man was shot in the stomach. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition and was later pronounced dead.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office identified the man as Ron Hernandez, 45, of the 5000 block of West Washington Boulevard. According to autopsy results, he died from multiple gunshot wounds.

A boy in a passing vehicle was also shot, Sweeney said. The boy, who age was not released, was shot in the leg and hand. He was taken to West Suburban Hospital in good condition.

No one is in custody, and Area North detectives are investigating.

In the day's first shooting, in the 100 block of East 120th Street about 10 a.m., a 17-year-old boy was shot in the knee, said Officer Bari Lemmon, a police spokeswoman.

The boy was standing in an alley when someone approached him and fired shots, she said. The boy was taken to Roseland Hospital, where his condition had stabilized. No one is in custody, and Area South detectives are investigating. Police said the boy is a documented gang member.

About 11:20, in the 700 block of East 92nd Place, a 27-year-old man was shot in the left toe, police said. He was taken in good condition to Trinity Hospital. No more information was available.

Two teens were shot about noon in the 3500 block of West Lexington Street in Homan Square. A 17-year-old boy was shot in the right thigh; a 19-year-old man was shot twice in the left arm, Lemmon said. Both were taken in good condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, she said. Police said both teens are documented gang members.

The 14-year-old girl was shot about 4:30 p.m. in the 4000 block of South Lake Park Avenue in Oakland, police said. She was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, but her condition was unknown. Police had no more information.
