CHICAGO — The Chicago Board of Education approved a new charter school for Austin at a meeting Wednesday.

Moving Everest Charter School will serve about 810 kindergarten through eighth-grade students and will be located at 416 N. Laramie Ave., according to a statement.

The school will open in the fall of 2015 with kindergarten and first-grade classes in the new facilities, which are currently under construction.

“We are very pleased the Board has approved our plans and look forward to serving our initial classes of children next fall,” said Michael Rogers, executive director of Chicago Education Partnership, in a statement.

Moving Everest is a non-profit, and will collaborate with By The Hand Club to provide after-school programs for students.

“This represents a tremendous opportunity to provide a high quality educational option to the children and families of the west side of Chicago,” said Mika Krause, school principal, in a release.

At a meeting in November, Austin residents and community leaders agreed that many Austin students attend high school outside of the neighborhood, and there is much work to be done to keep the neighborhood schools as attractive options.
