CHICAGO — Mayor Rahm Emanuel and CTA President Forrest Claypool will break ground at the Wilson Red Line Station on Monday, officially beginning the reconstruction and expansion of the "L" station in Uptown.

The $203 million project is one of the largest projects in CTA history and will replace the deteriorating station, which was built in 1923, with a modern and more accessible one.

The project also will create a safer environment for pedestrians by removing 100-year-old tracks and signals, along with moving infrastructure from the streets and sidewalk, the Mayor's Office stated.

The station will serve as a new transfer point between the Red and Purple lines.

The projects is part of a $1 billion initiative, the CTA's Red Ahead program, that hopes to modernize and maintain Chicago's most-used "L" Line.
