ROGERS PARK — The family of a Loyola University student slain during an attempted robbery Friday will hold a memorial service Tuesday to remember the 23-year-old pre-med student.

Mutahir Rauf was described as "an extraordinary and beautiful human being," according to an obituary posted on the page of an online fundraiser that was launched to help offset burial costs.

"He was charismatic and handsome with gentle, loving demeanor," the obituary reads. "Above all, Mutahir was a beloved son, doting brother, and trusted friend to those who were blessed to have known him. His family and friends were so dear to him that they were, in essence, the means of his very existence."

Loyola announced the plans for a memorial service on Monday, three days after Rauf and his brother were walking about 7:50 p.m. in the 1200 block of West Albion Avenue when two others approached, pulled a gun and demanded their belongings.

Police said there was a struggle for the weapon, which fired, striking Rauf in the head and chest. Ald. Joe Moore (49th) said Rauf thought the gun was fake and tried to grab it.

The memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Mundelein Center Auditorium at the south end of campus.

Following the service, the family will hold a private reception with close friends and family.

"We all carry some of his journey with us," the obituary continues. "People like Mutahir never die; their spirits are immortal. His spirit will continue to forever light the darkness in our hearts."
