CHICAGO — A man was shot by an off-duty Cook County sheriff's police officer in West Town early Sunday, police said.

At 2:50 a.m., an off-duty officer was walking in the 700 block of West Grand Avenue when he saw a man waving a handgun in a crowd, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago police spokesman.

The off-duty officer walked up to the man and demanded he put the gun down. The 27-year-old man then allegedly pointed the gun at the officer, and the officer opened fire, Estrada said.

A second man recovered the gun and fled on foot. The 27-year-old man suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and is listed in critical condition, Estrada said.

Area Central Detectives are investigating.
