CHICAGO — An elderly South Side couple was found dead Thursday, apparent victims of carbon monoxide poisoning, authorities said.

When Clemmie and Nancy Jones didn't show up for a Thanksgiving dinner, concerned family members requested a well-being check of their home in Grand Crossing.

Fire and police personnel arrived at the home in the 6700 block of South Dorchester Avenue about 4:35 p.m. When they peered into the front window, they saw an elderly man lying unconscious on the floor, said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a police spokesman.

They forced their way into the house, and determined the 76-year-old man was dead. A search of the home led to the discovery of a 77-year-old woman, Sweeney said.

They were identified as Clemmie Jones, 76, and Nancy Jones, 77, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said. Their deaths were due to carbon monoxide intoxication and a "faulty natural gas appliance exhaust," an autopsy determined.

Fire crews found high carbon monoxide readings in the home, Sweeney said. An investigation in their deaths in ongoing, he said.
