CHICAGO— A man is in critical condition after driving into Lake Michigan off of Lake Shore Drive Friday, fire and police officials said.

At 3 p.m.,  a man drove backwards into Lake Michigan near Balbo Drive, said Larry Langford, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman.

After crossing Lake Shore Drive, the man drove into the Lake at a high speed. Rescue team dove into the water to recover the man, who was taken to Northwestern Hospital and listed in critical condition, Langford said.

The SUV was removed at 5:30 p.m.

The incident is under investigation, police said.

In a separate, unrelated incident, at 10:30 a.m. a Chicago Park District vehicle slid into Lake Michigan near Oak Street after hitting a patch of ice, Langford said.

The person operating the vehicle was able to get out before it submerged underwater. No injuries were reported, Langford said.

That vehicle has yet to be recovered.
