LINCOLN PARK — A number of Lincoln Park High School and neighborhood elementary teachers are set to receive "from guts to grants" awards Tuesday night.

The awards given yearly by the Oppenheimer Family Foundation to Chicago Public Schools teachers are intended to help support project-based learning in the classrooms and help teachers who often dip into their own pockets to make projects possible.

The "guts to grants" name comes from the family business Oppenheimer Casing Company, which made sausage casings for hot dogs. The foundation created the grant program with stock from the business.

This is the 39th year of the Teacher Incentive Grant program, but the foundation plans to continue supporting CPS teachers in new ways starting in the 2015-2016 school year.

To date the organization has donated more than $3.7 million to CPS teachers in grant money.

This year's recipients will be honored Tuesday night at Lincoln Park High School.

The 2015 Teacher Incentive Grant includes 134 winning projects from 263 teachers for a total of $175,900 in grant money.

Teachers from Lincoln Park and Old Town schools receiving the grants this year include:

LINCOLN ELEMENTARY:

  • Amy Andrews, Debbie Hayes-Miller

Lincoln Conservation Conversation

Students at Lincoln continue the "conservation conversation," as they build on last year's efforts to observe and monitor animal species in our local community, along with growing native plants.
