CHICAGO — A 15-year-old boy was shot and killed Friday night in South Deering, police said.

Around 10:45 p.m., the boy was walking with a friend in the 10400 block of South Bensley Avenue when the driver of a dark minivan opened fire, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

The boy was struck in the stomach and taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Sedevic said.

He was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office as Deon Gilbert, of the 8100 block of South Evans Avenue.

The shooter headed south after the incident and is not in custody, Sedevic said.
