UPTOWN — By the end of the month, Uptown residents should have a new neighborhood cafe with a bike theme and a familiar name.

The much-anticipated Heritage Outpost — an extension of Lakeview’s Heritage Bicycle General Store — will open at 1325 W. Wilson Ave.

“Because the whole building is being renovated, it’s a large project,” said Mike Salvatore, who owns the Heritage stores with his wife, Melissa.

The Outpost will be a coffee shop with bike decor, including several signature bikes displayed. There won't be accessories or bike repairs on site, but workers will steer people to their Lakeview store and to local bike shops nearby.

"We don't want to step on anyone's toes," Salvatore said.

Salvatore said the shop equipment is being delivered this week, and the crew will need at least a week to set everything up.

The shop still faces city inspections, but "if everything passes, hopefully we’ll open in the next couple weeks,” said Salvatore.

Heritage Outpost is an offshoot of Heritage Bicycle General Store, 2959 N. Lincoln Ave.

Salvatore said the Outpost has a similar DIY look and feel to the original store, but “more grown-up.”

“It’s going to be similar, but at a graduated level, a little more polished,” said Salvatore.

Heritage Outpost also will have a to-go window, where customers can grab a quick cup of coffee before heading to the "L."
