CHICAGO — A restaurant employee was shot to death Friday evening as someone robbed the place, police said.

Around 7:10 p.m., a man armed with a handgun walked into the restaurant, in the 5200 block of West Madison Street, and demanded money, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a police spokeswoman. The restaurant was identified as See Thru Chinese Kitchen, authorities said.

The victim, a 45-year-old man, "began to retreat to the back of the restaurant" when the suspect fired his weapon, hitting the victim, she said.

The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the man as Chang Z. Qui, 41, of the 3200 block of West Wallace Avenue.

No one is in custody, and Area North detectives are investigating.
