CHICAGO — Two 19-year-old men were charged with murder after a fatal shooting in South Austin Friday night.

The shooting in the 5500 block of West Corcoran Place left a 23-year-old man dead after he was shot in his face and armpit and a 24-year-old man in stable condition after he was shot in his arm, police said.

Police identified Jermaine Powell, 19, of the 5900 block of West Huron Street and Joshua Grayer, 19, of the 1200 block of South St. Louis Avenue as the shooters. They were both charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery. Powell was charged with two counts of aggravated battery, police said.

Grayer was one of seven men charged with kidnapping and sexually assaulting three girls on the West Side last October. That incident occurred about a half mile away from the shooting in the 700 block of North Parkside Avenue.

The two are expected in bond court Monday.

Monday morning, a sign on the building posted by Michael Kerrigan of Pinecor LLC, who owns the building, warned residents of more police presence around the building after the shooting.

According to the note, three people were shot outside the building, and the man who was killed Friday, Denzell Franklin, frequented the area. Police, though, said only two people were shot in the incident.

"I was informed by the police that the the deceased man regularly hung out around the building. Although it occurred on the street, the man that was shot ran into the rear of the building where he collapsed and died," the note read, adding that the company has been adamant about residents reporting suspicious behavior outside the building to protect them and their families.

"It is fortunate that the 'shooter' did not follow him into the rear of the building, otherwise one of the building residents may have sustained a gunshot," the note continued.
