CHICAGO — Two men were charged in the shooting of an off-duty Chicago police officer after an attempted robbery early Friday morning.
Jordan Bailey, 19, of the 15300 block of South Drexel Avenue, and Abdourahmane Soumare, 19, of the 700 block of East 79th Street were charged in connection to the Oct. 24, 2014 incident, police said.
Bailey is charged with attempted first-degree murder and armed robbery, as well as several felony charges for firing a gun.
Soumare is charged with aggravated battery with the discharge of a firearm, attempted robbery and for discharging a firearm.
The shooting occurred in Grand Crossing at 12:50 a.m. Friday in the 7400 block of South Langley Avenue.
Bailey and Soumare allegedly approached the 41-year-old officer while he was in his vehicle. As the victim attempted to drive away, Bailey and Soumare allegedly opened fire and shot the officer in his chest, police said.
The officer was able to drive away and flag down a squad car.
The officer was transported to University of Chicago Hospital where his condition had stabilized; he was later transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital.
The wounded officer is an eight-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department and has received 22 departmental awards, police said.
Bailey and Soumare are due to appear in court Sunday.
