CHICAGO — Someone stole $8,000 from a charity box at Pastor Corey Brooks' New Beginnings Church overnight, police said.
Brooks, an outspoken pastor known for preaching against violence, angrily denounced the burglary on Twitter Saturday.
Police said a parishioner noticed broken glass at the church Saturday morning and called police. Officers discovered someone had broken into the church, located in the 6600 block of South Michigan Avenue, overnight and stolen about $8,000 from "a charity box," said Officer Janel Sedevic, a police spokeswoman.
Police were called to the scene about 8:30 a.m. Saturday. No one is in custody.
Brooks, who has appeared in ads supporting Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner, suggested the burglary may have been politically motivated, and said he has received death threats recently.
"It's one thing to disagree with me I can deal with that but mess with my family and church is to much and over the top," he wrote on Twitter.
