AUSTIN — Leland Elementary School in Austin will unveil a brand new schoolyard Saturday, a project that includes new equipment, outdoor classrooms and turf fields.
The 1 p.m. Saturday unveiling is outside the school at 512 S. Lavergne Avenue. City officials, CPS officials and community leaders are expected to be on hand.
The work is part of a pilot initiative called "Space to Grow: Greening Chicago Schoolyards." The goal is to turned outdated playgrounds into parks that benefit not only the school kids, but also neighborhood residents.
The yards include turf fields, jogging tracks, basketball courts, playground equipment and more.
