NORTH LAWNDALE — A West Side arts group will use a barbershop as the backdrop for a community arts project Friday.

West Side Art Chicago will present "Black Eutopia," an interdisciplinary community arts project, from 1-7 p.m. Friday at Carter's Barber Shop, 3620 W. Cermak Road in North Lawndale.

West Side artist Rae Taylor will use the barbershop to highlight the work of performers, visual artists and local barbers. Taylor aims to curate a hybrid experience through music and sound, exploring the theme of black labor and art.

Artwork from visual artists Krista Franklin, Leah Gipson and Terrence Woodards will be displayed. Poetry, dance and music performances will feature artists Justice Long, Erica Cameron, Gira and Yaw. An archiving workshop will be lead by Skylah Sensaharae.

The event will also feature a panel discussion with artists Samantha Hill, Andres Hernandez, RJ El and local community members.

The event is open to the public. The suggested donation, which benefits West Side Art Chicago, is $5.

"Black Eutopia" is West Side Art Chicago's second event. Led by art therapist and community activist Leah Gipson, the open collective of artists is committed to community development in North Lawndale, Austin, Garfield Park and Humboldt Park.

Black Eutopia is a Chicago Artists Month event.
