DUNNING — Pools at all of the City Colleges of Chicago are closed after a female student nearly drowned during a swim lesson, college and fire department officials said Thursday.
A student taking a swim lesson Oct. 9 at Kennedy-King College in Englewood was taken to a nearby hospital after an incident during a class, said Angela O'Connor, a spokeswoman for the City Colleges of Chicago.
The pools at Wilbur Wright College in Dunning, Daley College in West Lawn, Malcolm X College on the Near West Side, Olive-Harvey College in Pullman and Truman College in Uptown are closed pending a "review of the matter," said Katheryn Hayes, the director of communications for the city college district.
“Our thoughts and prayers remain with the student and her family," Hayes said in a statement.
O'Connor declined to give any more details about the incident.
The student was not identified by officials.
Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said paramedics were called to Kennedy-King College at 6343 S. Halsted Ave. about 2:30 p.m. Oct. 9 with a report of a possible drowning, and took a patient to a nearby hospital.
Police officers were also called to the incident at the Kennedy-King pool, and deemed it an accidental injury, said Chicago Police Department spokeswoman Officer Janel Sedevic.
In addition to college programs, the city college pools offer swim lessons for children and adults of all ages.
