EDGEWATER — The former 6300 block of North Kenmore Avenue, which Loyola University took over this year, has been renamed St. Ignatius Community Plaza, the university announced.

The university received more than 200 nominations for the plaza's new name. An online poll decided the final name, according to a statement.

The initial suggestion was simply St. Ignatius Plaza, but Loyola President Michael Garanzini added "Community" to the name "in order to be more inclusive of Loyola's relationship with its host communities," according to the statement.

Loyola staff member Shireeta Allen suggested the initial winning name.

The university bought the 6300 block of North Kenmore Avenue from the city last year and transformed it into a bike-and-pedestrian pathway, essentially an expansion of its campus.

The university says several events open to the public, including an art fair scheduled for May 30, would be held in the plaza. In the summer of 2015, the university and local organizations will host an outdoor movie viewing. Next fall, the university will also host an Oktoberfest event.
