LINCOLN PARK — The man who may have helped you learn the building blocks to read this article is being honored at Facets Boo! Bash Gala.

LeVar Burton, the long-time host of the PBS series, "Reading Rainbow," and actor on the television series "Roots," is the recipient of this year's Facets Award.

"Few individuals in the entertainment industry have shown the breadth of vision and commitment to education as LeVar Burton," said Milos Stehlik, director of Facets. "An entire generation understands the value of reading because of his iconic presence as the host of Reading Rainbow."

Paul Biasco says people are encouraged to dress up in costume for the event:

Burton's lifetime achievements also include his roles in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and other "Star Trek" series as well as the children's film "Blizzard," which he directed.

Facets is honoring Burton with the award for his contribution to society and culture in advancing dialogue and race as well as his role in teaching children to read.

Burton also acted in television dramas including an adaptation of Richard Wright's story, "Almos' a Man," "And the Children Shall Lead" and the "Jesse Owens Story."

The Facets Boo! Bash is an annual fundraising gala that benefits the cinema center's year-round educational programming, including the Chicago International Children's Film Festival.

Tickets are $125 for adults and $50 for children.

The event will be held Oct. 19 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Park West, 325 W. Armitage Ave.
