ENGLEWOOD — An Englewood laundromat will host a free wash and dry day for low-income residents on Thursday.

The "Laundry Project" is sponsored by Florida-based nonprofit Current of Tampa Bay Inc. and will allow residents to wash and dry as many loads as they want from 3-7 p.m. Thursday at Wash & Relax Laundry, 1153 W. 69th St., which also hosted a free wash day in July for the organization.

"Typically we spend $700 to sponsor this event, but our last time in Chicago we washed 508 loads and spent nearly $1,000," said Jason Sowell, president and executive director of the nonprofit. "There were still people in line the last time we came to Chicago, and we hate to turn away anyone who shows up in time."

The purpose of the project, which started in 2009, is "to help families struggling financial to maintain some basic necessities like clean clothes," Sowell said.

He added that there is no limit of loads a person can wash and all washing materials, like soap and bleach, will also be provided. Each year the project is hosted in 12 other cities, including Austin, Texas; Canton, Ohio; and Las Vegas.

Next year Sowell, who will attend the event, said he hopes to expand the project in Chicago.

"I would love to do this once a quarter in Chicago starting next year," he said.
