LINCOLN PARK — Just in time for Halloween, Lincoln Park Zoo's Pumpkin gave birth to a bright orange baby.

Pumpkin, who is a Francois' langur monkey, gave birth at the Helen Brach Primate House Sept. 30, according to the zoo.

The zoo hasn't been able to determine the infant's sex just yet, as he or she is clinging to the female adults.

The infant's fur will turn black later in life, with a white stripe stretching from ear-to-ear and a black crest atop the head, according to Maureen Leahy, curator of primates at the zoo.

"The newest Francois’ langur is healthy, nursing regularly and is showing signs of growth,” Leahy said. “Older sister Orla has already shown her support by alloparenting, a process in which the other female monkeys take turns carrying and providing care to the young.”

Guests can visit the infant daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Helen Brach Primate House.

Francois' langur monkeys are considered endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and are typically found in the southern Guangxi province of China, northern Vietnam and west-central Laos.
