RIVER NORTH — Freebie alert: The Chopping Block cooking school is throwing a party.
There will be free food and wine tastings galore during an open house Friday at the Merchandise Mart location.
From 11 a.m.-7 p.m., Chopping Block chefs will lead demos of their most popular recipes, including the signature apple pie — 320 of which were devoured at the Lincoln Square Apple Fest in September.
Janet Fuller says the Chopping Block hopes to show off a bit on Friday:
Merchandise will be 20 percent off throughout the store, with three exceptions: wine, Vitamix blenders and Big Green Egg grills.
The harsh reality for fans of the latter two products is that they never go on sale, said Chopping Block spokeswoman Andrea Miller. The Chopping Block is one of only three retailers within city limits that sells the Big Green Egg, whose legions of fans call themselves Eggheads.
If you work in the Mart, you do get an additional 10 percent discount on purchases at the Chopping Block — not just Friday, but year-round.
The event is open to the public; registration is not required.
