GOLD COAST — A saree-inspired fashion competition inspired by "Project Runway" will pit designers against each other for a cause.

Sararose on Oak will host a Designer Saree Challenge Thursday, Oct. 16 in Sararose Krenger's boutique at 67 E. Oak St., Suite 5W.

Five designers including Krenger were each given one rectangular saree fabric to reimagine into a new design.

Lizzie Schiffman Tufano explains how the dresses will help those in need:

The event is a fundraiser for the White Rainbow Foundation, a nonprofit that works to empower women in India's "City of Widows" in Vrindavan who are ostracized for losing their husbands.

Krenger's reversible hot pink jumper and the four other competing designs will be showcased at a fashion face-off at Sararose on Oak starting at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16 with a runway show at 7 p.m.

Of her own creation, Krenger said her goal was to create "a piece that would celebrate women across the world. I wanted it to be as bright and frilly and girly as possible, and yet I wanted to symbolize strength and the evolution of change."

Attendees will vote and choose the winning look at the fashion show. The winning designer will travel to India to meet with the White Rainbow Project team and learn more about their work.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased in advance online.
