ENGLEWOOD — For the 12th straight year, members of a nonprofit will fast for a week and encourage the community to do the same in honor the anniversary of the Million Man March.

The Rev. St. John Chisum, pastor of Gifts From God Ministry and chairman of the Pastors of Englewood organization, said fasting will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday and end 6 p.m. Oct. 16. Only liquids should be consumed during this time, Chisum said.

"And for those with medical problems who must eat, we are asking that you instead deny yourself of something you normally do for seven days," Chisum said. "Jesus said in Matthew 17:21, 'Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.' This is a time when we need God to tell us what to do to stop the senseless killings and bring peace and healing to Englewood."

On the last day of fasting at 7 p.m. Chisum said members and the community will meet at his church, 1818 W. 74th St., for prayer and discussion about their fasting and the anniversary of the march in Washington, D.C. Light refreshments will also be served at the meeting.

"People should fast and pray until they hear a word from the Lord. They should write their revelations from each day and come prepared to share them with everyone at the meeting," he said.
