ENGLEWOOD — A South Side hospital is hosting a blood drive to provide a safe and adequate blood supply to the local community.

The blood drive runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in room 276 on Tuesday at St. Bernard Hospital and Healthcare Center, 324 W. 64th St. Last year's blood drive netted 19 donations, and this year hospital officials said the goal is at least 25.

"The problem [with so few blood donations] is that fewer people are donating. Seniors and college students are the usual sources but not as many seniors have been participating," said Derek Michaels, a hospital spokesman.

One blood donation can save up to three lives, said Michaels, who added donations also help cancer patients, critically ill newborns, burn patients, accident victims and transplant patients.

While walk-ins are accepted those wanting to make an appointment to donate should call 877-543-3768.
