BRIDGEPORT — The city's department of health is offering free influenza shots at McGuane Park.
Co-hosted by the 11th Ward service office, the event takes place 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Oct. 21 at the park, 2901 S. Poplar Ave.
The Center for Disease Control says the "flu season" commonly peaks between December and February, but can start as early as October and last through May.
High-risk populations for contracting the flu include children younger than 5 years old and especially those under 2 years old, adults 65 and older and pregnant women. For more information, see the CDC's official website.
According to the city's health department, flu signs and symptoms "usually include fever and respiratory symptoms, such as cough and runny nose, and possibly other symptoms, such as body aches, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea."
To help combat the spread of the virus, health authorities recommend getting a flu vaccine in October to ensure as many people as possible are vaccinated headed into the flu season. They also recommend staying away from sick people and the routine washing of hands to limit the spread of germs.
