ROGERS PARK — A new mural under the viaduct on Greenview Avenue celebrates Rogers Park's past and present, said artist Katherine Ross.

Ross and her business partner, Karen Zissis, designed and painted the mural for $5,000, paid for by the 49th Ward's participatory budgeting program.

Among the images featured in the mural, at Sherwin Avenue, is a street-level view of the Granada Theatre, which was torn down by Loyola University in 1990. Other views include the old Rogers Park Hotel, at Pratt Boulevard and Sheridan Road; Pratt Pier; the city's skyline from the beach; and the Heartland Cafe.

The images are framed by Birch trees, a nod to the Birch tree forest that once covered the land that's now Rogers Park.

"We kind of wanted a sense of looking through the trees and seeing these different scenes of the past and present of Rogers Park," said Ross, who had lived on Fargo Avenue in Rogers Park before moving to Lincoln Square with her family.

Ross and Zissis own Kinc, a design and fabrication company.

They finished the mural this week.
