CHICAGO — A suburban man on parole since May has been charged with beating a 53-year-old man to death in Humboldt Park last week, authorities said.
Antwon Williams, 33, of suburban Berwyn is charged with one count of first degree murder, police said.
Police said Williams was in the 2600 block of West North Avenue about 9:40 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, when he got into a "verbal altercation" with a 53-year-old man and repeatedly hit him in the face and body.
The man, later identified as Raphael Watts of suburban Aurora was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 11:25 a.m. Saturday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
Officials there released an autopsy Wednesday that ruled Watts' death a homicide.
Police released news of the charges against Williams Wednesday evening. Williams was released on parole this past May, according to Illinois Department of Corrections records. In 2009, Williams was sentenced in 9 years in prison for vehicular hijacking.
Since 1997, Williams has been convicted and received prison sentences for separate cases involving robbery, theft and drug possession.
